KENNEDY ON VOTER ID SUPREME COURT DECISION

Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision upholding Indiana's voter photo ID law:

"If there's a silver lining to today's ominous ruling, it's that six justices seem willing to reject any photo ID law when clearer evidence exists of its actual burden on elderly, low-income, minority, disabled or rural citizens. The Court did not foreclose future challenges to voter ID laws that impose demonstrable burdens, and Congress and the states must be vigilant to ensure that today's divided ruling is not exploited for partisan purposes in this election year."
